The Buffalo Run Half Marathon and the Catalina Marathon will combine to form the American Trail Championship, presented by Suunto. Awards will be based on the combined time in both events and given to the top male and female overall as well as winners in each age and weight category. This represents the total number of miles in the Rose Bowl Half Marathon, Buffalo Run Half Marathon and the Catalina Marathon. Amazing as it may seem, the distance from Pasadena to Catalina is very close to 52.4 miles. For the 2008 Rose Bowl Half Marathon and 2009 Buffalo Run and Catalina Marathon, anyone who finishes all 3 races will receive a special finisher t-shirt with the 52.4 logo on the front and the logo of all 3 events on the back. Awards will be given to the top 5 times overall in male and female only for the first season. We will post the cumulative times following the first two events and monitor it through the finale at the Catalina Marathon next March. There is no charge or entry fee, we only ask that you check off on your online registration that you plan to do all three. Good luck training for a great challenge.
The Buffalo Run is the ultimate in trail running using the East End trails of Catalina Island. This half marathon course takes you from sea level to a 1600 foot elevation then returns to sea level. Spectacular views of San Clemente Island and Avalon. We also feature the popular flat and fast 5K course.

: Very challenging, hilly course on the East End of Catalina Island. Approximate 8 mile climb on dirt fire roads until the descent back into Avalon. The first two miles and the last two miles are on pavement (approximately). The picture below shows the east end of the Island, where the half marathon run takes place. Avalon is the cove to the right in the middle of the photo where you see a white dot in the water. It gives you some idea of the terrain of the race and the beauty of the views.

: The new 5k course will be an out-and-back route down Avalon Canyon Rd via Sumner Ave. The turn around point is at the Wrigley Memorial. Please see map for a detailed route.

Start line is located on Sumner Street. We'll ask you to come to the start line at 8:45 for a mandatory racer meeting. Please pin your bib on your front stomach or chest and do not pin the bottom pull tag. Stay in order at the finish line and when you finish, we will ask you to stop at the end of the chute to pull your bib number tab. You must stay in order until we pull off your bib number tag.

If you can't make it to packet pick-up and you are having someone else pick up your packet, please download the waiver, sign it and have that person bring it with them. They will be able to get your packet and race number.Waiver will be posted at a later date.
A percentage of all proceeds from the Buffalo Run will help support the protection and restoration of Santa Catalina Island Conservancy’s wildlands. By participating in this recreational event, you are aiding in the preservation of numerous rare and endangered species found on the Island and nowhere else in the world! All half marathon fees include a $7 donation to the Catalina Conservancy

All half marathon participants receive a long sleeve t-shirt, post race refreshments and an excellent goody bag. All 5k participants receive a short sleeve t-shirt, post race refreshments and an excellent goody bag.
The award ceremony will be at Wrigley Stage. Special awards go to the overall male and female finishers in the half marathon and the 5k. Awards also go to the top three males and females in each age division in each event, the top three males and females in the Buffalo Divisions and the overall male and female in the Islander Divison.
Overall male and female finishers of the Half Marathon will each receive Suunto t3 Wrist Computers. Suunto is Official Course Sponsor of the Buffalo Run as well as presenting sponsor of the American Trail Championship.
Unofficial results will be posted at the front of Leo's Drugstore ½ hour after the first finisher crosses the line, then updated every 30 minutes. Any questions regarding timing, please see WB Productions in the red tent at the finish line. Awards ceremony will follow once the majority of entrants are in. No awards can be handed out prior to the awards ceremony. Awards are given 3 deep in all categories (except top islander male and female) and to the top male and top female overall.
Not including the Start and Finish, there are 8 aid stations on the half marathon course and one aid station on the 5k. The half marathon map indicates where the aid stations are (on both the 5k and half marathon). They are shown by the white triangles with black circles around them.
Gatorade Endurance Formula is the Official Fluid Replacement, Power Crunch is the Official Energy Bar and Arrowhead is the Official Water of the Buffalo Run. For more information about the Gatorade Endurance Formula, go to www.gatorade.com/endurance. The aid stations have Arrowhead water and Gatorade fluid replacement drink. You may leave items at the aids stations, and we will do our best to get them back to Avalon at the end of the race. We can not, however, guarantee the return of these items. If the item is of value to you, please keep them with you.

Boat reservations are It is not included in the entry fee. You can either book your travel to the island on the Catalina Express out of Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point, the Catalina Flyer out of Newport Beach, or the Marina del Rey Flyer from Marina del Rey. Catalina Express and the Marina Del Rey Flyer have early morning race day boats that you can take on Saturday. Please see the travel page for full details.

Training Resources
A Running Experience Club (A.R.E.C.) in Long Beach offers a training program for the Catalina Marathon and Buffalo Run Half Marathon, running select trails throughout Orange County to simulate the Catalina races. The club was founded in 1982 and has had tremendous success at prior Catalina running events with members who have been running the Catalina Marathon since 1977, including the race winner in 1983. A.R.E.C has vast experience trail running, has certified running coaches and delivers a program that combines physical preparedness with an individual strategic plan.
