Course Change for the 2007 Catalina Triathlon

Due to potential landslides, Pebbly Beach Road has been closed to all traffic (pedestrian and vehicular). In addition to the 2006 closure of Pebbly Beach Road, Catalina Island was also hit with two major disasters in 2007 (fire & flooding). Due to the significant impact these events had on the City of Avalon, the bike and run courses have minor changes once again this year. The Swim Course and Transition Area have not changed. We have worked very closely with the City of Avalon, the Santa Catalina Island Company and all municipal departments to come up with a fair and exciting alternative.

The new distances are Swim = 1/2 mile, Cycle = 15 Kilometers, Run = 3 Miles.
Swim (1/2 mile): A swim of one half mile in the calm blue waters of Avalon Bay finishing adjacent to the pier. The course will start on the north side of the pier and finish on the south side of the pier swimming in a clockwise direction. It is a flat water ocean swim. Wet suits are allowed. The start is at water's edge. No snorkels or fins are allowed.

*** The transition area is on right side of the pier as you are standing on the beach facing out into the ocean. It is on the sand, so if you want to bring items such as a bucket of water to rinse your feet off, a towel, etc, you can do so.
Bike (15 kilometers): The bike course will not as challenging this year. You must wear an ANSI approved helmet and headsets are strictly forbidden. The mount/dismount line is near the corner of Crescent Avenue and Catalina Street.

You will cycle west on Catalina St. (away from Avalon Bay).
Right on Beacon St.
Left on Sumner
Left on Tremont St.
Right on Avalon Canyon Road and bike towards the entrance of the Wrigley Memorial.
Turn around at the entrance and return down Avalon Canyon Road.
Turn right on Tremont
Left on Descanso Avenue
Left on Beacon Street
Continue past Catalina St to Sumner for your 2nd and 3rd loop.
After your third loop, turn right on Catalina and head towards the transition area.
There is a gradual incline on the way out and decline on the way back. Please watch your speed on the way back and be aware of merging cyclists on Catalina St.

Run (3 miles):

The run course heads out the transition area and west on Crescent Ave. towards St. Catherine Way.
Follow St. Catherine Way past the Casino and up the hill towards Hamilton Cove.
The ascent to Hamilton Cove will be a challenging uphill run.
Upon reaching the entrance to Hamilton Cove, turn around and head back down the hill merging back onto Crescent Ave.
Turn right on Metropole until it dead ends at Tremont.
Turn left on Tremont St.
Turn left on Sumner Avenue towards the Finish.

The finish will be at the end of Sumner Avenue in front of the Wrigley Stage.

*** The transition area is on the right hand side of the pier as you are standing on the beach facing out into the ocean. It is in the sand, so if you want to bring items such as a bucket of water to rinse your feet off, a towel, etc, you can do so.
