Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve
The Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve is comprised of 752 acres of
wetland and upland habitats in Newport Beach. It is one of the few
remaining estuaries in Southern California and is home to nearly 200
species of birds, including several endangered species, as well as
numerous species of mammals, fish, and native plants. Beginning in
mid-March, several endangered bird species will be nesting along Back
Bay Drive in the Reserve, including: the light footed clapper rail,
California least tern, California gnatcatcher, Belding Savannah Sparrow
and the least bell’s vireo. Their habitat is very delicate and easily
damaged when disturbed. Please be respectful of nature. Do not litter or
disturb any form of plant or animal life in the Reserve. Stay on
designated trails and follow the rules within the Reserve.
Equipment
Wetsuits are allowed and they are optional for participants. Typically, about half of the participants wear wetsuits during the race. Water temperature is in the mid 60's. Helmets are required on the bike. There is no riding in the transition area. No snorkels or fins in the swim. No drafting on the bike. No MP3 players!
Energy
There will be one fluid station in the transition area and one fluid station on the out-and-back run course that you will have an opportunity to hit twice. Arrowhead water and Gatorade will be served at each station. Power Crunch bars, water, Gatorade and fruit will be available at the post-race food area. All chips should be taken off at the finish line and given to the timing company, who will be collecting them. Please, no iPods or other Mp3 players on the bike course. You must be able to hear other participants on the course.
Chip Instructions
- Chips are non-transferable! Be careful not to switch chips with anyone.
- Wrap the chip anklet around your left ankle before starting the race.
- Start in your assigned wave or risk not being scored.
- To receive an official time, you must run or walk across the timing mats at the start line, on the course, and at the finish line.
- Return the chip anklet to us in the corral after the finish line.
Race Numbers
You will be given two small numbers in addition to your bib number, one for the front of your helmet and the
other for around the seatpost of your bike. These numbers match your bib number. Your bib number must be worn during the run portion of the race ON YOUR FRONT. Please do not alter this number in any way. Bike, helmet and bid numbers must match in order to be allowed out of the transition area. Swim cap must be worn during the swim and helmet worn during the bike. Body marking is not required but pens will be available at the Expo and on race morning. It is extremely helpful for photography and security reasons and we encourage it.
